You're not the first requesting this feature and I think the plugin-API
could be perfectly used for this. There will be hooks for user and
identities creation.

Somebody already started to create a generic LDAP class which can then be
used for both contacts and identities retrieval:

The plugin-API isn't ready yet but it's the next big feature we're working
on. You can have a look at it by checking out the deve-api branch from your
SVN repository.
