Hi Thomas, This looks great, thank you. I did not see anything on IMAP folder management (e.g. rename, new folder, delete folder). Is this intended to be in scope for the core project? Or is this something that would be better as a plugin? (it seems core to me, but my perspective is known at times to be suspect...) New Wiki/site location

Not an "official developer", but here's my take on things: - We're trying to make the move from using sourceforge's utilities to hosting our own website through bob johanssen's server space/bandwidth. beta.roundcube.net will be the website once the website has been moved over, and the trac issue tracking system is in place. - http://roundcubewiki.baizman.net is an unofficial wiki that's supposed to provide a place for documentation efforts to take place until the new site comes up. Once trac is installed, it has it's own wiki, so all (or any) of the documentation on the unofficial wiki will then be moved over onto the official wiki. New Wiki/site location

Hi guys - I'm getting a bit confused with the recent posts about wiki, trac, etc - and can't seem to find the "official" Wiki/site. http://beta.roundcube.net doesn't seem to resolve for me, and there's obviously http://roundcubewiki.baizman.net which has sprouted up too, but doesn't seem truly "active" yet. Can one of the official developers shout out with what the official plan is, so we don't end up with information splintering? Cheers, Mark.

I've found that it is easy to add/remove pages as need be, but its important to find an information structure that you are happy with and let it grow organically from there. Rather than installing just a wiki, would you consider a trac installation instance? It makes source management SO much easier (of course, it's SVN), but you have an awesome ticket manager, a wiki built in, and a really nice reporting feature where it tells you what all the latest commits were. I think this would be a really good allin one solution, if someone can install one. All the big projects as of late have started switching to it: http://trac.wordpress.org http://trac.cakephp.org etc. It makes people want to report bugs, because it's so much more inviting than sourceforge's services, and it makes things easier on the developers as well because of the nice reporting features. Can't login to roundmail

Hi, I am new to this roundmail and to this list so bear with me. I am running a Linux server with Apache 2.0.54 and mod_php 4.4.0-r3 on Gentoo. After installing roundcube (v0.1-20051007) and giving read+write permissions to the directories logs and temp to the respective Apache owner, nothing happens when a user logs in i.e. a timeout occurs. The only thing I can see is the following reference in the error log of roundcube: [10-Okt-2005 16:39:55] PHP Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /var/www/service/htdocs/horde/program/include/rcube_imap.inc on line 301 Any ideas? Courier and Mailbox Icons

Greetings, Just ran into another nifty Courier issue. In main.css, folder icons appear to be assigned to Sent and Trash via the truncated mailbox name (i.e. sent, trash). When running Courier, the truncated names are "inboxsent" and "inboxtrash", respectively. I had to modify the CSS to reference those names, instead of the defaults, in order to make the icons appear. Highlighting the folder drop-target

Hello, I just discovered RoundCube and jumped on the list last night. What a great job with the ideas and the code! I was thinking the same thing that Mark had about drop targets. I added a mouseover / mouseout sequence to program -> steps -> mail -> funcs.incbeginning at line 214 when the <li>'s for the individual mail folders begins. Mouseover gives the <li> a new class called 'rollover' which I defined in skins -> default -> mail.css at line 255 with the other mailboxlist styles. With this the individual mailbox will take on a highlighted background color (could be other styles too, of course) when you roll a dragged item over it. The only thing with this is that the inbox and trash png's dissapear during the rollover. You could of course do individual rollover classes for the inbox and trash <li>'s. Roundcube Plugins/Extensions..

Hi Everyone, Glad to see a nice community is evolving around Roundcube. I wanted to point out something to keep in mind before development got too far ahead. By nature, any good piece of software will try to find a middle-ground between feature-bloat, and bare-bones mode. Since most developers have decided that they cannot figure out exactly what will make all of their users satisfied, they develop a plugin architecture into their product, which enables third party developers to add features to the program. Almost all of the successful programs, whether desktop based (Firefox, thunderbird, etc.), or web based (wordpress, squirrelmail), etc. have done this. Roundcube allows for a certain degree of customization though skinning, which is great, but I believe as we move forward, we should expose a plugin API so that third party developers can develop great plugins. Squirrelmail has been quite successful in this regard: http://squirrelmail.org/plugins.php , fostering an active development community of plugin authors, who might eventually move into core development after they get comfortable with the code. So basically to summarize, I'll outline what I think the advantages that a plugin API gives us are: 1) Features that are controversial, such as a WYSIWYG editor, can be implemented without "bloating" the core code, yet fit into the program nicely for people that want them. 2) The core developers have some pressure off them because if someone really wants a feature, they can easily implement it as a plugin. If the plugin gains popularity, it can later be rolled into the main code. 3) Builds an active community around roundcube. Both squirrelmail and wordpress have been very successful at attracting third party developers because of how easy they make it to develop extensions. I'm sure there are many more advantages to a plugin api, but these are the main ones i could think of. Also, as far as implmentation goes, I believe wordpress has an excellent plugin API, simple to develop on, as well as simple to maintain. thoughts, suggestions, bugs

Hi Everyone, I found this project on freshmeat and must say it looks great! Here are some things I would like to know how to correct: 1) when trying to delete a folder, it does nothing (I'm using Firefox 1.5beta) 2) when using the "select: all" feature at the bottom of a folder listing page, i can't seem to move them anywhere (it does nothing on drag and drop). Selecting multiple ones manually works just fine, as well as unread. 3) I can see every other imap user in my folder listing, is there anyway to hide this? (very important to me, users can read other users emails if they want. These are virtual accounts) 4) any chance the first time someone logs it can be forwarded to the Identities page to setup their account? 5) the logo should take you back to your email listing. 6) there are numerous errors in your docs (README says squirrelmail in it). The author also uses "Shure" threwout the documents. Proper Spelling is "Sure" 7) A feature that allows an admin to import squirrelmail data (address book etc..) to your app would be awesome. This webmail application looks like the most promising one I have seen with a nice template system, xhtml/css2 support, lovely default template. Plus it seems to run very fast compared to squirrelmail. Oh yeah, wow was it easy to install. Thanks, Justin

anyone having problems with SMTP auth?

Hi all, My SMTP auth works fine with Mozilla thunderbird (using system account), but fails with a: *SMTP Error in /opt/web/roundcube/program/steps/mail/sendmail.inc (179):* Connection failed: 554 : Relay access denied No valid recipients in roundcube. Anyone else running into this problem? Have workarounds? I have my SMTP domain, username and password set in the config file - seems like it could be nice to have this keyed off of the end-users username:password also, is there any way to store these in the session and pull them out for this purpose, or is that generally frowned upon? (I always want to do this for "single sign on" across my various PHP apps anyway) thanks for any info, j.

Complete redesign of the cache mechanism

Hi, I've been making some small benchmarks and with big mailboxes I see a noticeable delay when unserializing the cached mailbox array. So I've modified rcube to instead of storing serialized arrays of the mailbox in the db, it now has a 'messages' where each message (only the header actually) is stored in a row. The perfomance gain is about one and a half second in my development machine. It's still just a test, only uid, subject and the date are stored. Althought it's not optimized in any way (a lot of 'deprecated' code is still being executed). I'll keep playing with this approach and perhaps supply a patch if I see it really improves performance. Trying Roundcube - can't log in

Hello, I've installed the latest release of Roundcube on my OpenBSD server. However, i cannot log in. SSL: -I've set the default_host to 'ssl://localhost:993' -When I try to log in, the browser just sits there until it times out (no data is returned) -In my mail log file, I see this: imaps SSL service init from <my-ip> Command stream end of file, while reading line user=??? host=<my-host> Non-SSL: -When I do not use ssl, and set the default_host to 'localhost', the browser returns, but I get the following error message: IMAP Error: Authentication failed (LOGIN):<br>"a001 NO LOGIN failed" in on line 0 -In my authlog, I get this (see reason below): Login disabled user=seth auth=seth host=localhost [127.0.0.1] -While I do not want to use non-SSL on my server, I tried it just to see what would happen Possible issues... -I have a self-signed cert for my IMAP SSL -I am not surprised that the non-SSL doesn't work, as I have disabled it, see "LOGINDISABLED" below. Improving cache algorithm

Hi, I've been reading the IMAP specification to find ways to improve current rcube cache algorithms. The following is from the IMAPv4 specs: 2.3.1.2. Message Sequence Number Message Attribute A relative position from 1 to the number of messages in the mailbox. This position MUST be ordered by ascending unique identifier. As each new message is added, it is assigned a message sequence number that is 1 higher than the number of messages in the mailbox before that new message was added. Currently rcube stores the whole header list for each mailbox in the DB. If the current message count is bigger than the message count of the cache then it fetches the whole header list again and stores it in the cache on DB. I think this could be improved by redesigning the caching algorithm, since each new message in a mailbox is given a sequence number higher than the other ones, we can just fetch the new messages. The following code should clarify the idea: $mbox_count = messagecount($mbox); $cache_count = count($cache); if ($mbox_count > $cache_count) { $newMessages = iil_C_FetchHeaders( $conn, $mbox, "$cache_count:$mbox_count" ); $cache = array_merge( $cache, $newMessages ); } Unfortunatly the specs also say: Message sequence numbers can be reassigned during the session. For example, when a message is permanently removed (expunged) from the mailbox, the message sequence number for all subsequent messages is decremented. The number of messages in the mailbox is also decremented. Similarly, a new message can be assigned a message sequence number that was once held by some other message prior to an expunge. We can solve this however since we have the UID of each header in the cache. Instead of fetching the (mbox_count - cache_count) headers, we can fetch (mbox_count-cache_count)+1, with this we should get as the first header the last one in the cache. We then compare its UID, so if we have in the cache the last header with id=269 and uid=468 but in the new list it has the id=269 but the uid=493 it means that there have been deleted messages in that folder and that we must revalidate the whole list. This could also be optimized but it'll require a quite complex algorithm which I guess is not worth it for most cases. The following pseudo-code should show the idea good enough: $mbox_count = messagecount($mbox); $cache_count = count($cache); if ($mbox_count > $cache_count) { $newMessages = iil_C_FetchHeaders( $conn, $mbox, ($cache_count-1).":$mbox_count" ); if ($newMessages[0]->uid != end($cache)->uid) { //revalidate the cache $cache = iil_C_FetchHeaders( $conn, $mbox, "0:".($cache_count-1)); } $cache = array_merge( $cache, $newMessages ); } The code I think is simple enough although I would like to discuss this before trying its implementation, I'm worried about the specs support in different servers. ciao, ivan

Just to make sure the rest of the group got to see Mark's reply (see below). To add my own comment to Mark's reply: While I am by no means a javascript guru, I don't believe it is possible for javascript to affect the local PC. The cursor icon, is controlled by the core API of whatever OS you happen to be running (OSX, Windows Shell, KDE, etc). Web scripting, generally doesn't have access to that API (with the exception of ActiveX). I wonder if instead of changing the cursor, you could certainly have some help text appear to help guide the user to the correct action. Though, from a usability perspective, you are correct web users expect to single click to open mail or any other link. Requiring 3 clicks, without any noticable gain, seems confusing. My 2 cents. Log in for users with large mailboxes

Hi, A couple of coworkers have large mailboxes with 3000 to 7000 mails. Hence it takes a while before the mailbox overview (first screen after logging in) is rendered. They thought Roundcube was hanging as Horde/IMP doesn't have that delay. I presume the difference is because Horde/IMP is depending on the 'imap' PHP extension while Roundcube just talks IMAP over the established socket connection to the imap-server. Can't Roundcube be configured to read the first 300 mails (or the first 4 pages) when logging in and read the other mails on demand, that is when the user uses the navigation in the top right. In the majority of the cases one doesn't need to see the other/older mail. Or maybe the other mails can be read in the background after the 'homepage' is loaded. This allows reading the new mail etc and will make Roundcube more snappier. Just my 2 cents. Jasper

Roundcube 20051007 and loading times

Hello list, yesterday I upgraded to Roundcube 20051007. The loading time has significantly increased for any action I tried. e.g. opening an email consisting of just one simple text line takes about 15 sec. I switched back to version 20050820 and Roundcube is working quickly as it used to before the upgrade. Has anyone discovered similar problems? Raphael

better results with new IMAPD (courier-imap4)

Hi all, I just wanted to report that a newer IMAP server works WONDERS! I upgraded to courier-imap 4 from courier-imap 2.2 and the overall experience is much... zippier. if you are having problems with timeouts, your imap server may be the problem (IME) Also, if anyone is running against mac (tiger), I can walk them through the config process for courier imap 4 - took me a whilke anyway with the authlib stuff. regardless, I am excited by this performance increase - now I need to pull down the CVS version and put it up. is there anything that needs looking at? I am competent in PHP, not so competent in mail transfer and mail protocols, not competent in AJAX, though XML and javascript alone don\\\\\\\'t bother me, I\\\\\\\'ve just never mixed them. let me know if I can help. j.

Hi Jon, Thanks for your note. But its not really a browser issue. The problem (for me at least) seems to be that the receiver of the mail gets the body and header scrambled. If I send a mail to myself, the display seems fine. Its a weird problem. I've got two other webmail packages on my server (IlohaMail & Horde) and they don't experience the same problem. Thanks! Sadly, I have a problem that is keeping me from using it. When sending mail it seems that the message body somehow gets mixed with the header (or vice versa). A few minor errors regarding the new release: In the upgrade instructions, no mention is made of replacing index.php (Roundcube did not work until I replaced it). The README file includes this amusing section: Installation: ------------- For detailed instructions on how to install SquirrelMail on your server, please refer to the INSTALL document in the same directory as this document. Also, if I am reading the code right, RoundCube now automatically checks for IMAPS support and utilizes it with out the code hack discussed in "Re: Using imaps instead of imap"; am I correct in this assumption? Calendar Interface

Hi, I started working on a Calendar preview for RoundCube, as this is a major issue for web mail users - at least in my company - and current solutions don't offer any options to do (Squirrelmail for example). Three things: 1) I would like to hear about other's thoughts on this 2) I would like to hear about someone else's experience with parsing iCal in PHP (I have done work under Perl by using modules) 3) I would like to hear how such integration would be expected... Login problems

Hi, I installed roundcube 0.1-20050820 on a Gentoo Linux box. It went well, except one missing link to the config files for roundcube. The first time I tried to access roundcube I got: --- Warning: rcmail_startup(config/main.inc.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/roundcube/program/include/main.inc on line 35 Warning: rcmail_startup(): Failed opening 'config/main.inc.php' for inclusion (include_path='/usr/lib/php/php:program:program/lib') in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/roundcube/program/include/main.inc on line 35 Warning: rcmail_startup(config/db.inc.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/roundcube/program/include/main.inc on line 40 Warning: rcmail_startup(): Failed opening 'config/db.inc.php' for inclusion (include_path='/usr/lib/php/php:program:program/lib') in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/roundcube/program/include/main.inc on line 40 --- I had to create a link named config in roundcube/program/include pointing to ../../config/ Now I can see the login form but I can't login (Login failed)... There are no entries in the log files (the files are writable by the apache user) I guess this problem is related to "Re: Nevermind -- Fwd: Install problem". Hi Stefan, I am hardly an expert (the guy with the original nevermind email....), but it sounds like more of a problem with your php include path - my problem was solely due to over configuring my system before I tested it first and was a setting in the config/main.inc.php I can't remember exactly what the setting is (and I couldn't find it just now, browsing through php.ini) but I think there is an option for whether files in subdirectories of the current directory can be included in the php path by default. I could be totally wrong on this - kinda tired, but you may want to check it out. Hope this helps, j.

Hello everybody First of all, these are NOT complaints. Just constructive opinions :-). I coded my first webmail in '97 and had tens of thousands of users until I gave it all away a while ago (after not coding anything for years) so I do know how it's all supposed to work. These are not in any particular order. And I didn't read the code - I'm pretending to be an ordinary loser. * The install was easy and config variables eerily reminded me of the ones in my own webmail.... :-) Then again, I'm a long-time Unix administrator so pretty much anything is easy. * After I log out, the first login after that always fails. Second one succeeds. [DAMN! I spilled the wine] * In the folder view the top buttons don't scroll but in the message view they do. A little consistency won't hurt. * I have all my folders under ~/mail/. I first had imap_root=mail/ but then realized that some users had their folders in ~ (this is on a shared server with about 50 users). So I backed out to imap_root=''. I now have mail/INBOX in my folder list which won't go away (the folder doesn't exist). * I have my sent emails in mail/sent-mail and I'd like to configure Roundcube to do the same. * I had a REAL hard time opening emails. One click selects, but how the fuck do I open them? Web pages don't have a thing called double-click, so Roundcube shouldn't have one either. This was probably the worst of the problems. * The icons... The icons you don't use are 32x32 while the icons you use most are 11x11, or practically unclickable. Yeah, I'm talking about Next and Previons message/page. * What's the deal with having icons both in the top and in the bottom? [hours pass... wife is talking about religions...] [two bottles of wine finished, now all we gots are two bottles of cider] * Teh "Loadign" widow is in the top of the screen, not where you click. Clicking stuff doesn't alywas give immediate feedback. * The icons don't describe what they mean. Textual explanation under them would be great. * The "Print" icon launches a new window and the print window on top of that (Linux + Firefox). Why? * Trash has the stop icon? WTF? I didn't know it meant "Move to trash" until I stopped on top of it. A major no-no. * "Back to message list" icon hints "the previous message" which it isn't. * Reply and forward icons look different (the envelope). Why? The action is the same, only to different recipient - the content should be same. * The main Roudcube logo doesn't take me to the main page - whatever that is. People are used to clicking at the Big Logo Thingy to get back to where they started from. * Address book should open the first contact automatically * What's the deal between "view" and "edit" in address book? They are the same. * Preferences / Folders lists ALL files I have in my $HOME. The default folder list doesn't. * Hitting ESC while waiting for the above folder list to load makes the whole interface not work. Need to click "Back" on the browser to get the interface function again. * Clicking Inbox doesn't give teh user any feedback - it just took me around 5 seconds between clicking and seeing any difference. Install problem

Hey all, I really like the concept behind roundcube - it looks slick! but I am having some problems installing (or rather, authenticating once installed). My server is: roundcube.willowisp.net and I modified the index.php with a <pre> var_dump($_SESSION); var_dump($_REQUEST); </pre> after the session initialization. (pic below) I know the credentials are good, as it is my mailserver and they work in thunderbird. it doesn't appear to be translating the login form info into the session variables. Any ideas? Do I need to have register_globals on? thanks in advance, j.

Problem with IMAP usernames

Problem with imap usernames I don't know if its problem of my host or its general to imap, usernames of email are a code "mXXXXXX" in server and nicks person (@domain.com <http://domain.com>) are apart, nobody knows its server code but their nick, and using roundcube they can only login with server code and not nick like quirrelmail (but users hate squirrelmail). roundcube and subfolders (courier-imap)

Hey, thanks for this great webmail client, it is just the thing I am searching for. I have only one issue: Is there support for subfolders? And specifically with courier-imap, every folder is subfolder of the INBOX. I tried playing with imap_root but that didn't changed it. I attached a screenshot thanks, Florian

Installed a copy of the CVS code and stumbled across some major bugs: 1)SMTP broken! strlen(x)

Hi !! there are sevral places in index.php whith conditions like if ($_action=='error' && strlen($_GET['_code'])) where perhaps it could be the same to do if ($_action=='error' && isset($_GET['_code'])) it's not exaclty the same as if $_GET['_code'] is an empty string the first (original) condition will suceed but not the last proposed one. The advantatge of the last one is that it does not produce any warning in any error_reporting level. I just added the necessary changes for PEAR.DB + database replication support on CVS, running configuration needs to be updated as now the database backed is configured with just two variables, one PEAR DSN for read/write database and another optional one for the read only database. Session Invalid or Expired

Ahoy everyone, i love the look of roundcube and the interface looks very slick, but i seem to have run into a problem, i continually get session invalid or expired when trying to log on and when/if i get into the account as soon as i do an action it boots me out with the same error. Save drafts

Hello, I downloaded and installed RoundCube yesterday. What an excellent webmail program! While I look forward to spell check, the real feature that I'd like to see is the ability to save to draft in the compose window. Is there a way to do this that I'm just missing? Also, the tar.gz files that I downloaded from the site didn't have the index.php file. I had to grab the CVS version. Finally, I have very basic instructions that I wrote as I set it up yesterday. I would be happy to post them somewhere if it would help. Cheers, Ben
