I believe it is being worked on. Or at least I hope so!
On the subject of forums, I personally am in favor of it. I do agree that mailing lists (especially with no archiving capabilities) is an inefficient way of supporting a growing community.
With that being said, it was discussed just last week and the majority of the users (and developers) preferred a wiki/trac/arhive mix until the community grows.
Thats what communities are about: getting consensus and working together as a group. I can see where the originator of this thread is coming from, but starting a thread and announcing we all should come over to his website is a bit of an odd way to introduce yourself to the community isn't it?
At the end of the day, I think we will all recognise when it is the right time to segue to a BB-based support model.
Christ, I'm starting to sound like a marketing dweeb. Forgive me.... ;)

Hmm.. you might wanna check the mailing list archive before doing that. Actually, I'm not sure if there is a mailing list archive, and in that case, I can understand your actions.
Point is, there has been extensive discussion on how to handle project communication, so I highly doubt that those involved are just going to start using your forums 'just like that'.
Is it possible to setup or access archives for the list? or has all that old knowledge been lost in the ether?
