I would like to see it be committed also but as far as icons i prefer the text personally. As far as the weird chars or at least to know knowledge

Yup. I installed the spellchecker and it works pretty well, and I know my users appreciate it. It would be nice though if it were an official part of the project, and if the spell check button were part of the normal compose email icons.
I did have a ticket in our local issue tracker that said that after spell check there were extra weird characters, but I have yet to confirm this.
