I'm assuming your SMTP server requires authentication? If so, did you fill in your username and password in main.inc.php? If you did fill in your username and password, are you sure your SMTP server requires authentication? At first I thought mine did, and had filled in the info, but this was actually causing a login error because my SMTP server doesn't require login.
