Yes, that's going into the right direction. Unfortunately we don't have the "Safe as draft" function ready but an alert if the message should be discarded would do it in the mean time. The current sending icon was taken from the Mozilla Thunderbird theme but I'll look for a better one. I'm not sure if it looks good then the back-button is not at the left end of the toolbar...

Maybe we save it automatically as a draft and have a notice appear in the info panel telling the user that; we can avoid the popup completely while still saving the message.
Changing places for icons, and modifying send icon to something more "send" looking, connected with a message like Craig proposed, would be a good start. Another good thing could be placing a button for saving composed message as draft.
