I think that port RoundCube to java isn't a good idea (One of the best things in RoundCube for me, is that it's written in php :D).
But (since you are interested in a Java-based Ajax client..), have you ever heard about Zimbra? It is not only a Webmail, but a "Collaboration Suite". It's written in java and uses Ajax too..
