Address Book class will have a method to report it's capability ( predictive text, list, search etc... )
I'm not 100% sure if this is the right place to shamelessly promote a bug report related to the address book (and LDAP), but it sounds like what I'm missing in RoundCube's addressbook is one of those 'capabilities' you're talking of:
