One remark to this, though: the goal of creating a proper protocol is to make independent of the technologies used on each side. Of course we have Javascript on one and and thus not relying too much on binary data streams might be a good idea but the designed protocol should primarily fit the purpose of the application and not the language.
one more comment on protocol:
going with some type of standardized protocol would seem better than creating a new one, if possible. and even better if the protocol is implemented in the imap server, so that roundcube doesn't need to deal with all of that (dovecot may be adding support for jmap in the future - https://www.heinlein-support.de/sites/default/files/dovecot_recent_and_futur...)
