Nice work. Unfortunately we deal with PEAR classes and those changes should go into the official PREAR release.
If Swift Mailer can do the same as the Mail_mime class does (BTW: this is what consumes memory, not the SMTP delivery) we should really consider to use Swift. Also it's LGPL and not PHP licensed.
