I've noticed weird date sorting too.  I haven't done exhaustive analysis, but my hypothesis is that the sorting is by the date the message appeared in the folder, not the date it was sent/received.  Is that consistent with what you're seeing?

When sorting by date (displaying Messages 1 to 64 of 1211) with the

This happens with both Pretty Dates on and off, and in several folders
in a similar way.
