I really like the idea of colored accents on the icons. Adding some color cues would improve the process of locating the buttons considerably. Maybe make the plus button on the compose icon a light green, add a small red x positioned over the bottom right of the trash can delete icon, make the arrows for reply/reply all/forward different colors, etc. Don't take away from the simplicity and beauty of the icons that are already there, but accent them slightly.
