At least I have now found a patttern when it works and when not. It does not work with preformatted text within the blockquotes like in the following example:

<blockquote><pre>
Text line 1
Text line 2
etc. 
</pre></blockquote>

It looks like this happens when replying in HTML mode to a text mode message (Use always HTML mode).
