Well they don't exist exactly. The "feature" here is that IMAP allows you to create a hierarchy without creating the folders in said hierarchy. You can see this by creating a new folder called "level1.level2.level3" (assuming that '.' is your divider). You will see that folder 2 is a subfolder to folder 1 and folder 3 is a subfolder to folder 2, even though only one new folder was created.
