Client-side filtering for the epic fail. Thunderbird doesn't auto-expunge. So, unless you close Thunderbird (and have "expunge on exit) enabled, it will just hide the email in its frontend in the meantime. Hiding it of course means that another IMAP client still picks it up at the same time.

Also try setting the following in Thunderbird's Config Editor: (you may need to manually create these fields)
mail.imap.expunge_after_delete => boolean => true mail.imap.expunge_option => integer => 1
This mostly auto-expunges for me.. sometimes I have to force an expunge via File -> Compact Folders. (After setting the values, you'll want to restart tbird.)
