it worked for me too (and it's what I do on my staging environment and on my personal webmail), but I would also like to have a stable packaged version for webmail I install for company where I cannot add feature and/or change the interface to all users to fix a bug (interface change needs for the final users and the IT support staff to be trained on the changes)

With this I am independent from the maintainer and can upgrade immediately after release.

yes, it's true, but if you have hundreds or thousands of servers to manage you would agree packages are nice ;-)
