What do you mean "loading" an inbox? Are you referring to initialization just after logon, where new message notifications get displayed on the folder tree? Or do you mean simply clicking on the "Inbox" folder?
The slowness appears when users click on their inbox. It does not
matter if they are logging in or have had their email open for a period of time already, every time they click the inbox it throws an error that the server could not be reached, and eventually the messages appear.
How many rows per page are these users displaying? This is user configurable. If the value is high things will be slower.
Our default is 50 messages.
Like I said before, check what sort method these users have, and what your imap server does on that sort method. For instance, sorting on arrival date is usually very fast because the server doesnt have to do any sorting, but sorting on sent date can be very slow if your imap server doesnt keep an index of headers. If your server needs to sort all 8000+ messages on every click, you're going to have performance issues.
