The difference between being on the same switch (gigabit, at that) and using the 127.0.0.1 loopback interface is negligible. This setup does not really satisfy some of the key meanings of "remote".
In addition to error logs, I would whip out Wireshark or tcpdump and look at the network-level interaction between the mail client and IMAP server.
