it does seem to have only been introduced into the 0.9 series, but in all honesty I can't sat exactly when. i've been working recently on a project with quite a lot of emailed images so only really taken note just now.

just as a further note, the image is also not available as an attachment, except when forwarding, but when forwarding there is no option to download !

This sounds vaguely familiar, I think it's a bug that was squashed some time ago. What version Roundcube are you using?
