On my first attempt at installing roundcube i got exactly the same error & message. I discovered it was an issue with my ftp-client changing all the permissions, chmod-ing them to 644. i think this happened because i decided i would change the name of the directory i put the roundcube files into :)
if that doesn't solve you problem, what does you error log file say?
