Depends on the capabilities of the IMAP server, as well as how Roundcube connects to it. In my case, I need to use the plugin that has a driver for FTP connections, even though that plugin is not as well supported as the other.

We run dovecot 2.1.7 with dovecot-lda and managesieve. I tried vacation 1.9.9 but is this the right one? it behaves strange.

nope, add sieve to dovecot, and then enable managesieve, then if you like only vacation then disable all the rest in sieve supported rules in dovecot, vacation needs notify if i recall it right, see how rule.sieve is created if testing it, and then make sure to disable all the rest include not used to create that vacation rule
this plugin will not reply to maillist poststings, thay sometimes commes up on maillist that a user is on vacation, thinking of thefts invites :=)

why not use sieve and then managesieve plugin ?, then you can have it all, but this need sieve supported server
Yes, done that tonight and it works fine, I am surprised! The thing is, the user must call the admin to implement a filter, but ok.
