how should this work outside of roundcube ?
why not integrade drobbox into dovecot attachment handling ?, i dont know if thats already possible, but imho makes more sense if it could be controlled via imap to the imap server in a protocol way, possible already in sieve ?
just my own guess on it
have you checked plugins already in roundcube ?
I may miss speled what i want. The ideia is to have some storage withing the webmail, and not connect to external storage services (called cloud, like gdrive/onedrive/etc)

There's Dropbox integration plugin, but it looks not updated since the initial commit more than 2 years ago. https://github.com/hassansin/dropbox_attachments
Another plugin is kolab_files, but it uses a separate service and generally requires Kolab. Though a programmer could make some use of its code as a starting point if he don't want to install Kolab. It also allows "mounting" an external CalDAV/Seafile storage. https://git.kolab.org/diffusion/RPK/browse/master/plugins/kolab_files/ You can test how it works on KolabNow.com.
