Upcoming changes to Roundcube may have features that depend on what
kind of IMAP software is used.
Currently, the following popular software supports these proposed
features :
Dovecot Cyrus Courier dbmail
Do you use something different, and if so, what do you use ?

Agreed, however I believe some software has incomplete or buggy
implementations of what that software advertises via CAPABILITIES. I
am asking this so the most popular IMAP software can be tested
against the proposed features, and then possibly a list of
recommended or known-to-work software can be placed on the
Requirements page.
That said, what IMAP software do you use ?

Ah. Gotta love buggy software.

Dovecot 1.1.x at the moment.
... does this mean Roundcube might use X-REFERENCES2?

Currently dovecot (1.1.x) only.
Dovecot. It has been the fastest and most stable that I have tried so far.

Since early this year, RC has used the SORT extension ( RFC 5256 ) to
IMAP to speed up sorting messages. Some current work indicates a
significant speed-up using the search functions of the SORT
extensions when mailboxes have a lot of messages.
If the IMAP server does not support SORT, a slower fall-back mode is
chosen.
I saw no references to X-REFERENCES2 when the discussion surrounding
SORT was going on. I have to admit, I didn't know what X-REFERENCES2
was about until I researched it a bit. Basically, you are asking for
some type of message threading support, correct ? I found one
Roundcube Trac ticket relating to that from 2006. It was recently
tagged with a 0.4-beta milestone. No mention in the ticket if X-
REFERENCES2 would be used. In my research, it seems dovecot had some
support for that, but was removed due to some problems. It wasn't
clear if support was added back in later, and if that support was
still buggy. I didn't find info about X-REFERENCES2 and other IMAP
software in my relatively short search.
NOTE :
For those that are using EIMS, I scoured the EIMS web site and no
mention of support for SORT was listed. EIMS users will likely not
see any improvement in sorting or searching that is being built into
Roundcube.

When threading with THREAD=REFERENCES will be implemented, we'll see what can be improved in it. Then probably X-REFERENCES2 can help.

We're running Cyrus on Mac OS X Server (so Apple's implementation of
Cyrus, if there's any differences between it and the stock version).

Thanks for posting. That makes the totals :
Dovecot - 12 Cyrus - 2 EIMS - 2 Courier - 1
+1 more for Courier.
FYI, Courier does have this strange option of IMAP_DISABLETHREADSORT. (default is unset)
Explanation if set:
Those [Thread & Sort] capabilities will still be advertised, but the server will reject them. Set this option if you want to disable all the extra load from server-side threading and sorting. Not advertising those capabilities will simply result in the clients reading the entire folder, and sorting it on the client side. That will still put some load on the server. advertising these capabilities, but rejecting the commands, will stop this silliness.
