I know this is the kind of question people hate, but is there some sort of rough notion (say, to 6 month precision) of when the major releases might come out? And is "vNext" the same as 0.2 or 0.3?
Looking at http://trac.roundcube.net/trac.cgi/roadmap the plugin API won't be til version 0.3.
I ask because I'm contemplating using roundcube as the basis of a corporate messaging workflow app and would love it if my extensions could be implemented as plugins (for example, a plugin to generate and run forms to create documents to be emailed). I've looked at Zimbra and Joyent, and unfortunately they don't really have plugin support either; extensions require modification of numerous core files.

Hi Mark! Are there any alternatives to Roundcube? ;) I did some research a while ago and there seems to be no open source Web 2.0 Webmail system out there that is actually useable. Zimbra is pretty cool but closed, GMX, Yahoo and others don't publish their code (of course).... so Roundcube is pretty alone. Which is why there is so much focus on it.
That brings up another question to the core developers - did you ever try to get sponsoring from companies? I know that one hosting company in Germany is using Roundcube as their mail system, maybe they sponsor one (or a half) developer?
Just my thoughts,

We had several offers for sponsoring but money does not help if there are no devs. If some company can offer developer work, we would gladly appreciate it. Till is actually a "sponsored" developer as he works on RoundCube to make it fit his employers requirements.
I'm currently working on some project/code documentation to (hopefully) make it easier for new developers to start.

Basically all the work I got done on devel-vnext is sponsored by macbay (0) (and my youth :D). The circumstances were very good because I was able to work on RoundCube during working hours and I am allowed to make all changes public. I think the future this will also be the case as I make modifications, I will be able to release them.
But as Thomas has pointed out we lack man power in general. We have a couple people with SVN, but most of them seem to be unavailable.
Having said this, I am not implying that we want other people to develop so we can take a break. IMHO there are also simple things missing - e.g. people to review patches and commit them etc.. We have a couple waiting, but we could not get to yet.
We are also trying to progress through the nightlies (1) etc. so people can test fresh code more easily and give feedback etc. - in the end in order to be able to release more often.
Cheers, Till

Greetings all,
I have been busy finishing up work on a book that will be published this fall. In the next couple of weeks I will be done working on it and plan to get back to working on RC and the plugin system with Till.
