Hi, I've joined the dev list because I really really want gmail-like conversations in RoundCube. I use all my personal emails forwarded to gmail service because I like the gmail's webmail. I manages hundreeds of email a day, so I need an efficient way of sorting and displaying them. I'd like to know if someone is working on it to join him/them, and if no one is doing it, I'd like to start the developement.

You probably mean this : http://trac.roundcube.net/trac.cgi/ticket/1424907
I think some people is already working on it, since there already are some facilities about message threads into the IMAP class.

This is planned for later releases but is not a primary feature yet. Also note that threads as "common" mail clients have them are not exactly the same as the Gmail conversations. If you really want Gmail styles conversations on your IMAP account, you should have a look at this project: http://www.duroty.com/en/index.jsp

No, I don't mean traditional mail threads, like in thunderbird and outlook. I mean Gmail converstion style of grouping and display messages.

Exactly! That's what i want... but not in Java, I need it in PHP. And I like RoundCube, so I'd like to have that feature in RoundCube. Do you need some help coding? can we start develping it now? I only need some guidelines about RoundCube architecture and coding syle.

Well, roundcube isn't gmail, and although this would probably be a nice feature, I don't think we should be concentrating on it at the moment. "Old school" threading is in the works and there's a lot to do for the upcoming 0.1rc release. Although you're free to code and submit patches of course :)

Mik, I know I can take the code and do whatever I want with it, but I wouldn't like to waste my time coding a patch with uncertain possibilities of becoming part of the trunk, because it could be unusable too soon with new releases of roundcube. That's why I offer my time if you want to make this an "official" sub project of roundcube.

I'm not a roundcube dev or anything, but... It would be great to have both options built into roundcube so that a user could choose to either view by thread or use a gmail-style view. I think the gmail view feature is one that (if done well) could help to encourage many end-users to move away from gmail to other providers.
In other words, the gmail style view is a killer feature for some people, so if roundcube can offer it as a choice that would be great from my point of view. Traditional threading is also a nice choice and it would be great if they could both be integrated.

Well,
I guess that one should check whether google has a patent for this kind of
viewing mails. I don't know, but I'd say you should check this before
starting to implement it...
Just my few cents,
Greetings.
Where is roundcube officially based out of? If it's non-US it may not matter if they have a patent.

That's ridiculous. A patent on that! Makes no sense. And why should I care? I would implement thousands of webmails with that functionallity, and that's it, they couldn't fight against that. Duroty already have this functionallity, they say Duroty is the OpenSource Gmail, and they even have a Google-group. No, I don't care patents, I make the software Free.

I haven't looked to see if there is a patent, but your blustering is not really useful if there is. And a patent on that idea would make sense. Before GMail I had never seen conversation threading in that form. It probably meets all of the patent requirements.
That said, it would be a nice feature. But like with any other project it pays to be careful.

Sense rarely comes into the realm of Intellectual Property rights.
And why should I care?
Because Google probably has better lawyers than you.

The fact that another product has similar functionality doesn't mean anything, it could well be that they're infringing a patent as well.

Software patents does not exists in my country and the same is valid for many other countries around the world. If software patents are legal in some country and the patent exists, that feature could be disabled for that countries, but *only* after Google complaints. Conversation grouping could be an installable module.
That's why I don't care. Software patents should not stop Free Software developers :-)

Good point. This doesn't exactly follow your argument, but:
A lack of commitment from the roundcube devs on this feature should not stop Free Software either! If you were to build and offer a nicely integrated gmail-like threading feature for roundcube as free software, I would support adding it to the project and probably others would as well. I like how roundcube is simple, but gmail-style threading is a very unique and well liked feature AFAIK.
Unless roundcube has patent lawyers that they can consult in the states, there isn't much that a small development group can do about potential patents. Someone could ask google if they hold any related patents I suppose, but volunteer geeks can't very well screen their work for patent violations because there are too many patents that would need to be examined. It just doesn't seem practical to me. For all I know roundcube could be "violating" any number of patents as we speak.
Anyone agree? Disagree?
Peace,

Yes, you're right, but it should be easiest if roundcube devs would have that feature in their to-do list. I have really few time, I'm member of the UTUTO XS GNU+Linux core team and devel team and we have a lot of work with the distro.

I agree :-)
Nice discussion so far. It's good that we started to talk about patents but let's not be scared too much by them. Since RoundCube is not commercial, there's not much to get out of it by any patent holders.
Just implement new cool features and if somebody wants us to remove it again, we will do it.
In general I like the idea of having GMail-like conversations even if I prefer the "classic" threads. Pablo, fee free to start implementing it. We will surely not deny your patches if they are good enough but please note that for 0.1-stable we will not include more features.
I suggest to keep your sandbox up-to-date in order to be able to create a patch for the current Trunk version at any time.

Still only USA based companys or persons are affected by software patents, they dont exist outside of the US. I dont know where the 'owner' of roundcube lives. but I dont think the patent would be a problem.

i think it would be a nice option, but should go on the wishlist rather than the core development list. it seems that it's secondary to a lot of the other core functionalities that need to be cleaned up and finished.
IMHO of course. ;-)

Hey Guys,
Strangest thing is going on. When my wife logs into roundcube, she can't click anything. Can't click on the messages, the folders, or the top right nav items. She can highlight text by dragging but that's about it.
It's not dependent on the browser or the computer. I'm running 444 svn. I can log in and do everything fine on either computer and either browser so it seems to be tied to her account.
There are no javascript errors being generated after the initial page load either. I can't figure it out and I've never seen it behave like this before.
Has anyone else noticed this? It was working for her a few nights ago. I've been grabbing the latest from SVN every couple days.

Browser? Is Javascript enabled for her browser? I know in FF if you turn off JS, it won't work.

FYI.
I have basic Gmail-like conversation grouping in Iloha webmail. It was prety easy. As soon as you have implented the imap grouping, I can start developing the gmail-like conversations for RoundCube.
