Hi there
I'd like to get some facts and figures about how and where you people use Roundcube and what number of users access their mails via Roundcube. We already have a list of hosters who offer http://trac.roundcube.net/wiki/RoundCube but this might not be complete and it lacks any numbers.
We often get requests about this topic and I'd like to give some proven answers about the power of Roundcube when used in large-scale environments.
So please post some details about how you use Roundcube including:
Please also note if you would be willing to share your experience about the integration of Roundcube in your environment with people who ask us for help.
Thanks a lot!

Hi Thomas
I am working for the following two Swiss web hosting companies: Onlime Webhosting, http://www.onlime.ch Datenpark, http://www.datenpark.ch
At Onlime Webhosting, we are providing Roundcube already since
February 2007 to our customers. At Datenpark, we just started in
October 2009 as a replacement for Horde/IMP. The switch to Roundcube
should be done by the end of the year. ... so far without any
problems! Congrats to your great product!
I even wrote a import plugin for Horde/IMP user data such as Turba
address book entries & IMP identity. I can post the plugin if anybody
is interested.
RC usage statistics:
number of users: 200 average of concurrent users: 5 number of hosts serving RC: 1 (1 production + 1 testing instance) database backend software: MySQL 5.0.51 (Debian Lenny) IMAP backend software: Cyrus IMAPd 2.2.13 (Debian Lenny) Other webmail software which is offered as alternative: none
number of users: 3500
average of concurrent users: 30
number of hosts serving RC: 1 (1 production + 1 testing instance)
database backend software: MySQL 5.0.51 (Debian Lenny)
IMAP backend software: Cyrus IMAPd 2.2.13 (self-compiled/patched),
running on different server
Other webmail software which is offered as alternative: Horde/IMP
(replaced by RC by the end of the year)
And yep, I'm ready to share my experiences with others. Since the
integration of the 0.3 plugin architecture I am really enthusiastic
about this great piece of software!!!
Clapping my hands! RC definitely is the Swiss army knife webmail system.
Best Regards Philip Iezzi
P.S. The only thing my customers and I am really missing is: contact
groups. But hey, we can wait, don't hurry! Just keep up the good work.

French hosting company http://www.ovh.com/ provides Roundcube as a webmail.
I have no idea about the figures though.

Hi there,
we are about to move over to RoundCube 0.3 (away from IMP/Horde) as a
webmail client for our students (www.han.nl). Here are some figures:
Number of users (max): around 30.000 students
Average of concurrent users: we've had peak usages of 600 simultaneous
logins
Number of hosts serving RC: we currently have 1 active IMP server (and
1 hot standby). With RC we'll use 2 active servers (load balancer)
Database backend: MySQL (2 master master replicas)
IMAP backend: Cyrus IMAP (single server with warm standby)
As said, currently we use IMP for our students, but at the start of
next year we're moving to RC (working on some plugins first).
As a reaction on Plilip Lezzi's comment about the import plugin for
IMP/Horde where someone can import their Turba addressbook and IMP
identities into RC, I'm very interested!
And of course: many thanks to all who have been involved with a great
product (and not only from the user perspective!)

Hello,
We've been offering Roundcube to everyone at the University of Michigan for a bit over a year.
Number of users (max): 70,013 This is the number of preference sets in the database. We have more IMAP accounts, but they have not yet chosen to visit our Roundcube install.
Average of concurrent users: 500 to 2000 The number is highly variable based on time of day and our academic calendar. A snapshot from this morning shows: Active in the last hour: 2715 Active in the last 5 minutes: 1879 Active in the last minute: 1096 (we've got a plugin which gives stats like these that we're still preparing to share)
Number of hosts serving Roundcube: 19 We are using round-robin DNS. These machines are separate from our IMAP servers and serve Horde/IMP also.
Database backend software: MySQL 5
IMAP backend software: Cyrus and ImapProxy We use a proxy with unlimited credentials to allow authentication to be performed by CoSign (http://weblogin.org/)
Other webmail software which is offered as alternative: We continue to run Horde/IMP mail as we have for many years. Our Horde/IMP install has more regular users than our Roundcube. We differentiate our offerings by saying Roundcube is our modern, easy-to-use webmail and Horde/IMP is our feature-rich webmail. There are no plans to stop offering IMP.
Some interesting, un-shared modifications have been: * All folder searching and a new search interface * A checkbox column * Horde Addressbook read/write * Non-scrolling column headers * A new skin (still working to make it 3.1 compatible) * Forwarding full headers * Forced client refresh on upgrade * CoSign authentication
We're working on sharing these changes and more. We've had between 2 and 5 developers working on RC part time for the last year.
We would be happy to share more about our experiences with Roundcube if it would be helpful to anyone. If you couldn't tell from this message, I could go on for hours :)
Thanks to everyone making Roundcube for all your hard work!

Hi all,
At the San Pablo CEU University (Spain), we move to roundcube 0.3 in september 09, before we have and old squirrelmail.
Number of users: 15.000+
The server architecture is based on a 2 frontend active-pasive apache2 with MySQL 5 replication master-slave and 2 backend, active-pasive with postfix (2.3.3) and dovecot (1.2.6) authenticated to a Microsoft AD.
Our students are very happy with the change and its stability. Personally i am really enthusiastic with the plugin architecture and hope to see in time, some calendar and task plugins.
The plugins the we use are contextmenu and serverinfo, and testing more in the test enviroment.
Thanks to all people making Roundcube!

Hi Dennis
As a reaction on Plilip Lezzi's comment about the import plugin for IMP/Horde where someone can import their Turba addressbook and IMP identities into RC, I'm very interested!
Ok, I made my superduperbasic RC plugins available to public: https://trac.onlime.ch/public/browser/roundcube-plugins
My onlime_imp_usercopy plugin is based on Thomas Bruederli's
squirrelmail_usercopy plugin. It only works for IMP installations with
single identities (at Datenpark, we had a 1:1 relationship of email
address/account, so there was no need to provide multiple identities).
But it could be easily extended.
https://trac.onlime.ch/public/browser/roundcube-plugins/onlime_imp_usercopy README: https://svn.onlime.ch/public/roundcube-plugins/onlime_imp_usercopy/README
Grab it directly from our Subversion repository (anonymous login):
# svn co https://svn.onlime.ch/public/roundcube-plugins/onlime_imp_usercopy
It has been tested on RC v0.3-stable and v0.3.1
Have a nice weekend Best regards, Philip _______________________________________________ List info: http://lists.roundcube.net/dev/
Hi Zilba,
We're working on rolling out Roundcube to our student body here at the UO. It's still in beta, and we're looking at ways to collect utilization statistics like the ones you provided below. Would it be difficult for you to share the plugin you developed to provide these?
Just for the record, the product we're migrating away from is called Alphamail. It's open source, and had a SourceForge project page that has been taken down due to inactivity. It was written by a PhD student from our Computer Science department as his thesis project, and development ceased when he got his diploma. It's been stable enough, but the interface is somewhat clunky a the real focus of his work was on a multithreaded caching IMAP proxy midlayer that the web interface talked to via a proprietary protocol.
Thanks,
-Brad

I guess the sourceforge page is still out there. I wasn't able to pull it up earlier, I had assumed that it had been taken down. The page is here:
http://alphamail.sourceforge.net/index.html#status
As you can see, it hasn't been worked on at all for about three years now. We're running up-imapproxy behind roundcube, and it seems to be doing just as well, although I don't have any hard statistics to back that up. The AJAX design of Roundcube seems to be more lightweight than other models that require a full page redraw and re-enumeration of messages every time the page is updated.

Sorry for the long delay. I kept telling myself I'd polish it up, test it on a the newest RC, write some docs. But I didn't. Rather than delay more, I'll just link you my plugins as is: undocumented, possibly not working with the latest RC. Sorry. I hope it's useful. I'll keep it at this url for a month or so:
http://umich.edu/~ziba/adminplugins.tgz
It's three plugins: one supplies hooks for the other two.
Someday I'd like to polish it up and host it officially with other plugins. (Unless someone else wants to!)

Hello Ziba,
I made some adjustments to get it working for me. It looks like you have missed to adjust the template includes to use $vars array. In addition I added a check that $rcmail_config['skin_include_php'] is TRUE.

It worked out of the box on my development host running SVN trunk. Definitely a very good starting place for an admin panel, or at least some sort of status/debugging interface.
The log file interface is nice, but using that on my production hosts wouldn't work so well - I have multiple systems behind a load-balancer. Log aggregation of some sort would be a requirement. Anyone feel like a database logging plugin? Some sort of a read_log API hook might be nice too, to round out both sides of the equation.

Cheers, Ziba

Hi Zilba,
We're working on rolling out Roundcube to our student body here at the UO.
Thanks,
-Brad

We've been offering Roundcube to everyone at the University of
Michigan
for a bit over a year.
Number of users (max): 70,013 This is the number of preference sets in the database. We
have
more IMAP accounts, but they have not yet chosen to visit our
Roundcube
install.
Average of concurrent users: 500 to 2000 The number is highly variable based on time of day and our academic calendar. A snapshot from this morning shows: Active in the last hour: 2715 Active in the last 5 minutes: 1879 Active in the last minute: 1096 (we've got a plugin which gives stats like these that
we're
still preparing to share)
Some interesting, un-shared modifications have been: * All folder searching and a new search interface * A checkbox column * Horde Addressbook read/write * Non-scrolling column headers * A new skin (still working to make it 3.1 compatible) * Forwarding full headers * Forced client refresh on upgrade * CoSign authentication

Hello Ziba,
I made some adjustments to get it working for me. It looks like you have missed to adjust the template includes to use $vars array. In addition I added a check that $rcmail_config['skin_include_php'] is TRUE.
If it is ok for you I will bundle your plugins with my MyRoundcube plugin collection an host them on http://myroundcube.googlecode.com.
