A quick look and hack a the source reveals a pretty tight integration to an SQL database. Is anyone currently working on this? I might be able to help out.

Yeah, I am. Shoulda been done already, but the day job has been hectic lately. I'm probably two full days of work from having something ready to integrate - so it could be a week or two yet.
It will support global (read-only) and personal (read/write) LDAP address books.
