I use Dovecot, and just updated to latest CVS, but I am unable to sort by column. Does anyone know if I'm overlooking a setting either for roundcube or dovecot? I know Dovecot supports SORT.

I also use dovecot, and have the cvs version from a day or so ago,
and sorting has always been fine. I can't find any configuration settings regarding sorting. Sorry.
If you telnet to the server and type "a CAPABILITY" does it say "SORT"?
Wow, stinky for me I guess..
I type that command and all I get is the below text which does not include SORT. Does this mean I am out of luck and I am doomed to have a sucky NON sorted RoundCube experience? Changing my backend mail server is not an option..

Consult your IMAP server documentation to see if it can do SORT and how to
turn it on in its config?
Can anyone comment if client-side sorting is on the roadmap or not for
IMAP servers without server-side sorting?

I just heard back from my mail server software vendor and they stated that the IMAP server does not currently support SORT and they have no timeframe to do so at this point.
So, am I up the creek? I really want to use RoundCube but can't really do so if the mail sorting is all willy nilly.
Anything I can do get it to sort correctly?

Any thoughts on this? I really want to use RoundCube but can't without proper sorting.
Seems odd that it must rely on the IMAP server to sort, why not just sort based on the date in the email headers..
Can someone explain to me why my IMAP server must support SORT in order for the sorting to work?
I guess I don't get why RoundCube can't sort by date.
I am ready to dig into the code and write the changes myself if I can just get a little guidance or advice.

Just looking at the database structure ... If I look at it, the messages are stored in the database ... So why would the imap server need to support sorting ? If the messages are cached in the DB, then surely you can simply sort by column when selecting messages ?

Slight problem: Only the first page of messages are cached, so large mailboxes don't take a day and a half to load.
Solution: To enable client side sorting, the caching would have to be written so via configuration files a webmaster could toggle full or parial caching of a mailbox.

Because nobody has coded client-side sorting yet!
If the messages are cached in the DB, then surely you can simply sort by column when selecting messages ?
..still need to dev the client-side sorting, and caching is an OPTION.
Mojo Jojo wrote:

Sorting relies on the IMAP server because it takes way too long to fetch all headers from the server when accessing a mailbox that contains about 100K messages. But you expect to get the right 50 messages from that folder when sorting. Client-side sorting would mean to transfer 100K headers from the IMAP server through the RC server to the client which will surely break down under this heavy load.
This is the reason why client-side sorting is not on the road map and it will never be. We could talk about loading all messages into the cache and enable sorting when the message cache is complete. If you consider writing a patch solving your problem you should think into that direction.

The default configuration of RoundCube does not know if your IMAP server supports sorting and that's the reason why those parameters are there! They are not meant to control any client-side sorting but define which cols should become clickable if sorting is supported.
Thanks..

The cache was exactly where I intended to go with this, thanks for info which will allow me to go down that road.
Question though..
I assume messages are being displayed in RC as the headers are pulled, can't I just display everything from the cache instead of as it comes in? I could throw a "Headers Loading, Please Wait" or "Messages Sorting, Please Wait" message instead of showing mail, then show only messages from the cache.
I am not entirely sure this would work and I am not entirely sure I am talented enough to do it but I will give it a whack..
