I think this isnt said enough, but RC is really looking awesome lately. Some seemingly minor UI changes have really improved things. Ive been running recent versions in production (currently running 3813 :), and im only getting positive comments from people using it. We're also starting to see some really cool plugins, so thats helping a lot.
I think when you guys release 0.4, people are going to be very happy. I would personally even consider calling 0.4 1.0 instead, as it would take RC out of what looks to some like a beta stage. RC is far from a beta stage. It's stable, fast, very well designed, robust plugin architecture, etc. Releasing a 1.0 would give it the status it deserves.

I absolutely agree with Cor: The new UI is a vast improvement and we need to up the version ID to 1.0. This would increase adoption by several orders of magnitude. It is ready -- let's do it now.

I think it's not ready. The CSS is a mess. We need to work on its further cleanup, simplification and unification. We should even design a new skin (with help of usability expert and graphic designer). We need definitely a stable CSS/HTML code, so skin developers could finally create their cool skins. Now, it's really hard. We need to make code complete and clean as possible. Then we could release 1.0. After that we'll need to work on two branches. 1.x for bugfixing, small improvements and no API changes. 2.x for new features including API changes. I don't know if we'll have time for this.
There are also some features that I'd like to have before 1.0. Also the plugin API is changing too often now. I don't think it will be possible before 0.5 release.
I totally understand your reasoning, and its all up to the RC team of course :)
Im just thinking, why not release a 1.0 thats 'pretty damn good', and make a roadmap that has better skin support for say 2.0. I think it'll bring in more fresh blood as organizations may take it more seriously.
In my opinion RC is better in its current state than many 'mature' webmail clients.
But, whatever you guys prefer. I already know it's good :)

Sorry, if i speak some "blasphemy" or newbie thing, but did you see the development of Drupal? I speak about the componentization of this software. For a new theme, only need to uncompress the tar.gz. The same for each module/feature.
If i understood correctly what you wrote, ALEC, this is one focus of RC project, right?
Bests Claudio
