That's great ! :-)

Well done! The only thing that looks a bit awkward to me, is the huge "Attachments" place. But I don't have an idea how to change it.
Patrick.
Nice. I'd only make "Send now" button centered relative to compose area and some-how separated it from the "Cancel" button. Attachment area can be smaller, but I think we should preserve space for GPG/SMIME staff so it can push attachment area up when will be ready.

I'm not sure I like it - one of my favorite things about Roundcube is that it looks and feels like a traditional 'thick' mail client in a lot of ways that make people feel very comfortable with it. The new compose view is pretty drastically different, and I'm afraid it would scare people away, back to our old webmail system that I'm trying to lure them off of. People fear change :(
Maybe if there was an option to pick the layout? That would probably be harder to support, but I think I'd find myself maintaining a patch to retain the old layout if I didn't have an option to switch to it.

I just wanted to say I agree with Brandon. One of the major benefits of Roundcube is that its interface is familiar and easy for new users to understand. The new layout is pretty foreign, I wouldn't mind it as an option, but the present compose screen seems like a better default to me.

It has resizable height (when you enable CC, BCC, Reply-To, attachments list will be smaller) and width (vertical splitter). So, it just fit a free space. How about attachment list in current compose screen, it's bigger (but it just has fixed height).
Hi,
I agree with Brandon as well, I think the attachment area looks too big. I don't use attachments very much. I'd rather see the editor as wide as possible. Could the attachments go horizontally above the editor, kinda like with attachments when reading mail?
Thanks,
Phil

We could place all fields one below the other, but in this case (having all fields with 100% width of the screen) the width will be too big. So, the ideas for re-design were to:
below the attachment list)
And I think it's done right, but I see so many votes for "No". I'm depressed ;)

it takes some time to get used to it ;) looking at it a second time, i think that this could work.
what i would change:
the "header"/subjects/... on top and not on the left side ;)
message in" option - buttons are normally on the bottom right corner.
same applies to the "+" sign for adding attachments.
what about placing "priority" and "return receipt" to the left side
too? above attachments?
draft, etc.) to be left-aligned with the body textarea.
thanks for your work! raoul
I like the idea of a new layout for compose. I think what you have done is a step in the right direction, but from a layout perspective I think some visual balancing is in order. I've attached my photo shopped attempt at balancing the layout.
This layout puts message headers(sender, recipient, attachments) on the left, and message contents on the right. The layout also takes into account the list suggestions that the attachment area was too large. The actions of the attachment area in this layout would start as a blank(as in attached image), and add rows as attachments are added.

More ideas, but I'm still like the idea with header+attachments on the left and body on the right.
Hi
I thought you might interested to see what we've done with the compose screen in our RoundCube skin (picture2.png). As you can see, we also like having the mail folders visible on the left - and it still works fine even in 1024 x 768 mode.
I've also included a screenshot of the compose screen from our in-house webmail (picture3.png), which has evolved from feedback from customers over many years. I don't think we've had a single negative comment since this went live.
Thanks
Marcus

Thanks, but I should point out the last one is not RoundCube, it's a webmail application we wrote in house. We're currently in the process of preparing RoundCube to use as a replacement - since we're struggling to find the resources to keep our own webmail updated with new features.

Attached is my idea. It's a mixture of one of the ones from Alec and from Marcus. Here are the key points:
*) Full width editor *) I used the current way of displaying attachments because I think have a box with the grey bar at the bottom makes the element to "strong" my eye is drawn to it and it doesn't seem right. *) Send/Cancel buttons in the bottom left because that's where they are everywhere else in RC and "integrated" into the grey bar *) I haven't put a folder is because I am worried the user will find it confusing, are they supposed to click on the folders in the list? If they do will it save the sent message there rather than in the default location? Would it open the folder, and kill the message being composed?
Thanks,
Phil

My favorite by far is ALEC's http://detached.gigo.com/rc/yd/F3Do0grg/compose-full2.png for the following reasons:
The headers above the body, means people know how to use it without even thinking, there is no need to scan the page to understand a different format. It also jives with how we expect to read a message we receive, with the headers above the message body.
I love the 'gear' in the lower left corner which hides options that are not often changed, providing a simpler, less cluttered UI. While it's clear to me that a 'gear' icon is where one could go select options, most of my users would be befuddled, I think a text label of 'options' or the like would be necessary.
*Text labels of Send Now / Cancel are a welcome addition. Several users are confused thinking the green arrow means send. Small text labels below all the icons would be a great addition. It is clear to me what they mean but I regularly have users who don't know the red circle with a line through it means delete etc.
I also think tweaking it slightly to use Phi's version of attachments http://detached.gigo.com/rc/JX/meswyk1/rc_compose.jpg is more visually appealing since most messages don't have attachments, and so it's fitting that the attachments area is small and subtle.
ALEC's compose-full2.png is a design that makes good use of space, that my users will immediately be comfortable with. This makes me happy.

Could anyone please make a screenshot for those who're not using nightlies? :)
Or perhaps we already have a live nightly website?

+1 from me. But I would also like Sender drop-down to have same width as Recipient field (like in Phil's mockup). It makes top area look more polished.

Hi,
IMHO, the current compose page looks too empty and needs a redesign, the new compose layout (http://detached.gigo.com/rc/yd/F3Do0grg/compose-new.png) would confuse the users and the most comfortable layout would be a combination of:
folders on the left: http://detached.gigo.com/rc/yd/F3Do0grg/compose-folders.png no pop-up panel for editor type/save as/priority/etc: http://detached.gigo.com/rc/JX/meswyk1/rc_compose.jpg and attachment area: http://detached.gigo.com/rc/yd/F3Do0grg/compose-full.png or attachment area: - http://detached.gigo.com/rc/yd/F3Do0grg/compose-full2.png
Regards, Panagiotis _______________________________________________ List info: http://lists.roundcube.net/dev/
Looking at this one: http://detached.gigo.com/rc/yd/F3Do0grg/compose-folders.png
If you want to be consistent, and thats a design goal, then why doesnt the whole right div have a boxtitle header/class? All other pages do, only compose doesnt.
The same goes for most other examples. They're all missing boxtitles, so they're not consistent with overall design.
Regards,
Cor
