This error generally means that roundcube is not able to connect to the database. Check in your db config file if the database settings are correct and if you haven't made any typos. Also check that the user specified has permissions to access the database you are using for roundcube.

I remember getting this error after I'd configured roundcube, but hadn't run the SQL script to set up the database tables etc.
