Since there is no "double click" available through the iPhone
interface, is there an alternate way to open a message?

I know it's going to be small, but what about the preview pane?

I think that's the part I'm having a problem with. How do you preview
the message without being able to double click it in the message
list. Is there some alternate method I am missing?

No, I think he means, "how to select the message" that will open in the preview pane if the double-click doesn't work?
I'd like to use this opportunity so say that of course we'd love to make RC work on the iPhone. So if you have a couple iPhones to spare (and unlimited data contracts), please send them over.
Ping me off list. =)

P.S. More seriously - I always got the impression that the iPhone behaves just like Safari. So it should work indeed?

It behaves like Safari in how it renders content. Unfortunately, some
gestures are specific to the iPhone. When double tapping in Safari on
the iPhone, it zooms in and out instead of sending the traditional
"double click" that desktop Safari would register. Other things like
drag and drop will not work either in the iPhone. Check out the
"Understanding User-iPhone Interaction section on this document:
http://developer.apple.com/iphone/designingcontent.html
In regard to the Preview Pane, I do not see such a checkbox in the
Preferences tab. I am using the Version 0.1-rc1 package, not
anything from the development sources. Is this something that should
be available in rc1?
By the way, the "hack" I have been using is to touch once to select,
then touch Reply to read the message. Maybe something as simple as
adding an "Open" or "View" button at the top along with delete,
reply, new, etc. Also a button to "Move" would be helpful to overcome
the inability to drag and drop into a folder to file a message.

We've ordered one of those new "iPod touch" models just released yesterday. It doesn't have a Mail client, only the browser, so for those using it, Roundcube will be their only option. :)
Chances are we'll set aside a separate version for iPhone/iPod users, skinned to be smaller. A tappable "Moveto" and "Open" button might also be needed as mentioned before.

Has there been any development on this ?
Our company may be supplying some staff with iPhones, expressly to
use the RoundCube instance we have set up.
If the work is not yet complete, I might be interested in putting
some time into moving it forward.
If the idea has not had any implementation done, that's understandable.
Even if all I do is add an "Open" button to the interface. The r915
version I am testing has a "Moveto" dropdown once the message is open.
What would "skinned to be smaller" mean or entail ?
Smaller icons might be harder to hit accurately even though it may
save UI real estate.
I have played with a iPod Touch briefly ( it was not mine ), but no
real UI evaluation.

I'm guessing your IMAP server is closed off from the Internet, else
they could just use the mail.app on the iPhone... I don't know if
simply reskinning RoundCube would do the trick.

The issues I ran into with using RoundCube via an iPhone was the
inability to double click and drag/drop.
In my case, I support the mail server, so it's not just about getting
access to my mailbox. Sometimes it's nice to be able to bring up
RoundCube on the road to check a problem in someone else's mailbox.
Fixing the UI gotchas for the iPhone should not be a huge ordeal. The
app itself renders fine, it is just some of the behaviors that are not
available..

Correct. Our outside mail server is really a gateway to the internal
server. There are no usable accounts on the outside server. RoundCube
lets me selectively expose the internal server accounts to the
outside, after greylisting and spam filtering.

Yes but the work has to be done. I'm trying to determine if there has
been any work done for me to build on, or if I need to pioneer that
work.

I have done some work on this because I have been informed our
company will have four iPhone users next week ;)
Some questions :
Should I set up a separate theme, or modify the default theme ?
Would it make sense to create a "mobile" theme, since Google's
Android may create some specific issues ?
What about Win CE or Blackberry, any known issues ?
Other mobile platforms / devices like the Nokia N810 ?
( I don't think a WML interface is worthwhile )
Should RC sniff for the iPhone and customize the interface based on
user agent string ?
I have tentatively labeled the button "Open message."
It is possible to label it "Show message" or "Display message" or
some other term that is more descriptive of the action or more easily
translated. Suggestions or comments ?
There was a thread on the Users list about source code for the icons.
It was stated that the icons came from art available here :
http://kmgerich.com/2006/07/11/firefox-browser-ui-artwork-released/
However, that icon set does not include the icons for "reply" that I
would like to modify for an "open" button.
Are there SVG or .AI files of the "reply" button available somewhere ?
I can hack on the existing pixel-based files, but that is not my
first choice.
Right now I am hacking on a SVN snapshot, are the icon source files
in SVN ?
English is my language, and the label for this button would need to
be translated.
Is there a process for that ?
Depending on the answer to 1), there may be other label added.
Some people on this list mentioned other changes to make the skin
better suited to a small screen on a mobile device. I did not see any
recommendations on that. If there were, could you post them again in
this thread ? If there weren't any recommendations, now is the time
to speak up ;)
Before I start a Google search, does anyone know of any excellent
resources for targeting mobile devices with HTML / CSS / JS ?
There is no question eight.

There is no question eight.
I knew I would come up with one.
If a separate skin is desired, then I would likely work to include
the "skin preferences" patch so there would be a way to quickly
switch RC from "mobile" to "desktop"
I see a scenario where a user would access a RC instance from a
desktop, then use a mobile device, and then come back to their
desktop. For that type of use, it would be good to have a single
button to toggle between the skins optimized for the different devices.
For example, here are two sites with the same info :
Mobile : http://www.nseries.com/mobile/nseries/english/v3/352/n810/index.jsp
Desktop :
http://www.nseries.com/nseries/#l=products,n810
( uses Flash, but the point is the layout is much different visually
and make wildly different assumptions about the device and connection
bandwidth. )
BTW, I have a patch ( one line each in two files ) and button icons
to add the basic "open message" functionality.
I am waiting for some responses to my questions before creating a
Trac ticket and uploading my changes, in case there are good ideas
worth incorporating.
I assume a "svn diff" plus an upload of the new images would be the
correct step ?

Since there were no comments on my work with a patch for iPhone use,
I created a Trac ticket ( #1484680 ) that has a zip file with a SVN
diff and the three PNG files for the added button. Once I have access
to an iPhone for more than a few minutes, I might want to work on a
mobile device specific skin. No commitment at this point though.
